I first started lessons with L plates driving school in 2015 and had around 20 hours of lessons with Colin Dawes, he teaches really well and is a extremely friendly instructor who will turn you into a fantastic driver. I stopped doing lessons because of personal problems but came back to him in may 2018 because I wanted to start learning again, On the first lesson back everything came back to me and colin made sure we covered everything for my test. After attempting to learn to drive with another driving school around a year ago but having to give up as my nerves and anxiety got the better of me, I felt deflated knowing I’ve given up before, and extremely nervous getting in Terrys car for the first time. He quickly put me at ease and said to me this will change your life for the better I promise. Something that stuck with me! I learnt to drive with Colin Dawes on the recommendation of both a friend and my partner. I was very nervous and had never driven before but Colin was very calming and encouraging right from the start. The lessons were well paced and concepts clearly explained. Colin was very patient whenever I needed more practice of certain skills and built my experience and confidence up. I did not get the opportunity to practice outside of lessons but managed to pass the driving test first time last month. I found John Mell truly a gem of a person disciplined to the minutest detail when it comes down to the point of learning to drive. The biggest issue with learners like me is first to “unlearn” whatever we have learnt so far throughout our years of driving. This is where I found his focused devotion and logical approach in helping me first to get rid of bad reflexes.
Next comes his patience and care no matter how many times I made mistake he remained perfectly calm and composed. I further strengthened me in forgetting mistakes and focus ahead. This is very crucial as multiple things are going at the same time and if a learner just remain fixed at one mistake made, he or she cannot progress during actulndriving experience.

I am really lucky to find John from L Plates Driving School. I definitely agree with previous review that said he has patience of a saint and nerves of steel. He made me confident behind the wheel with his easy step-by-step guidance of how to drive safely.
I was really impressed with how he took time to make a personalised notes and discuss it together on each and every single lesson, to ensure that we made progress as expected. He also made a 'battle plan' and did some mock tests before my practical test, using the 'favourite routes' used by the examiners in my area.

I came to L plates after discontinuing lessons from another instructor as he was not patient at all, and made me feel worse about my driving. I found Ray Brewster at L plates who I learned with briefly, but he kindly referred me to Jim Eckford when he stopped covering my area. And what a great move this was!, as I finally found an instructor that was a perfect fit for teaching me to drive. Jim could not have been more patient and supportive. He understands learner behaviour, did not once become frustrated with me, and was kind, polite, and a great conversationalist on our journeys. He was also very flexible with duration of lessons and any pick up / drop off locations. Whilst I was chuffed I passed my test (passing on my 2nd attempt with 5 minors), it then dawned on me, I wouldn't have the positive weekly lessons and driving with Jim anymore :( If I had stayed with my first instructor I'm not sure I would enjoy driving as much as I do now. I naturally drive quite fast, and rather than knock it out of me, Jim would advise me and allow me to correct my speed, and encourage me to build up my speed in the right places. L Plates give you good information and booklets to help you pass (passed my theory on 1st attempt), and I'd 100% recommend Jim at L Plates for any learner, whether brand new, or like me, had a few lessons under your belt. I had a bad experience when learning to drive about seventeen years ago, and subsequently abandoned the idea of passing a test and getting a car of my own. I called Colin after a neighbour had said how patient and kind he was during her lessons. Colin took time to understand my nervousness, and I found it very easy to learn with him as he has a very calm nature. He has also never been frustrated by needing to explain things to me over and over again! Lessons were well-organised, and I also appreciated the written guidance provided, meaning I could read about what I had done in practice during the lesson. I have had weekly lessons with Colin for the last few months; I passed my test first time this week, and I am now off to pick up my very own car! I started Learning back in January with Frank and passed on the 15.11.2017 on my first test :) Frank was a amazing Teacher that was so patient and calm when it came to teaching me everything. He also has a great sense of humor that got me through some of the hardest and stressful parts of learning. I probably wasn't the easiest to teach due to me having lessons after a full day at work and normal being tired or in a bad mood but Frank always started the lesson with a massive smile and words of entrenchment that brightened up my driving lessons. I am so over the moon since I passed my practical test first time on Tuesday 5th Of September with only 3 minor faults in Eastbourne! A very big thank you to Tina Rixon for simplifying driving techniques for me. Tina was not my 1st instructor! She was my 5th! As opposed to over 40 hours with past instructors and was no where close to driving standard, I had only 15 hours, approximately, with her She built back my confidence that was almost ruined with previous experiences from my previous instructors. Her unique way of passing instructions in a simple and easy-to-comprehend manner is so amazing. Unlike my other instructors, she hardly ever blew my mistakes out of proportion but would simply give me another opportunity to right my wrong. Now my status has changed! I 100% recommend L Plates Driving School. Colin, the instructor that was chosen for me, was very calm and relaxed throughout my whole experience of learning to drive. He taught me what not to do and didn't lecture me about the mistakes I made (and I made a lot of them!), simply told me what I done wrong and what to do to avoid doing it again.
Colin is extremely friendly, I found the more I learnt to drive with him, the more we got to know each other, the more it felt like a normal drive around. I was learning at the same time but it didn't feel like a lesson which helped to keep my nerves down.
Unfortunately for me I let my nerves get the better of me for two of my tests, I knew myself I could do everything as did Colin. He was very good at helping me to stay calm and giving me good prep talks, making sure that I had practiced the parts that I was uncertain off before the test and giving me tips on how other students helped themselves to keep their nerves down. The 3rd test came around and it felt different to the other two, we hardly spoke to each other which helped me to picture how it would be in the test and when we got to the test centre we just had casual chats, it helped me completely forget about the fact that it was a test. I felt like it was a lesson more then a test due to neither myself nor Colin talking about it.
Amazingly I passed with only 3 minors which was a complete and total shock to myself, Colin on the other hand knew how well I could do and ever doubted me as a driver. He always looked at the positives even with the tests I failed on, never gave up on me and kept giving me positive feedbacks which helped massively.
I recommend everyone I know to learn with Colin, especially if they struggle with their nerves like I did. His calm, relaxed and easy going personality is exactly what I needed when I first began to learn, now I am on the road with my own car and have no concerns on how to do anything while being in the drivers seat. Just want to say a massive thank you to Colin himself as without his calmness I don't think I would have passed as soon as I did. Sophie Rose. Tonbridge.
