Driving lessons Crawley

December, 2014

I believe that Raj Purba is a fantastic tutor and his techniques of teaching really helped me understand how to approach obstacles and overcome them. He took the time to get to know me and it was easy to connect to him. He had a good balance of the way he was with me, stern when he needed to be and did not make me feel uncomfortable or negative about my driving. Not only did he teach me to drive and he taught me to become confident in myself and believe my gut instinct and for that I am thankful. I am now, thanks to him, able to have the freedom and independence that I never had before. Thank you again, Raj and I will always recommend you to other learner drivers. Good luck and best wishes to you and your family. Kelly Powell. Crawley.

Amazing instructor (Frank Judah). At first I thought about finding a week intensive course but after thinking about it I decided against it. 16 weeks later I pass my test first time with 0 driver faults and I couldn't have done it with out frank. Would highly recommend frank to anyone looking to learn to drive. Bradley Croll. Worthing.

I started taking my driving lessons with L Plates four months ago. I can't thank my instructor Raj Purba enough for the constant support and guidance that he provided throughout the training period. He made me calm and relax and allowed me to gain the confidence I needed for taking my test. he was constantly at my side to boost my confidence and encouraged me to attempt again and finally pass my test except two minor errors. Thank you Raj once again for your patience and guidance.

I found Frank McLaren a very good instructor, as he is well mannered and a very patient instructor, as soon as you step in to the car with him you straight away feel at ease, he is a very good teacher and pushes you in to doing things as soon as he seems fit, he knows his pupils very well and knows when to push you. I found him a great instructor and felt I made a great choice in picking Frank. From Andrew Leggatt. Bexhill.

Automatic driving instructors Bexhill

December, 2014

My first attempt at learning to drive came four years ago, and after only three lessons in a manual car my anxiety got the better of me and I gave up. It wasn’t until last year that I decided to give driving another go, and booked my lessons with Mark Napier. Mark has a calming and supportive demeanor suitable for even the most nervous drivers; he never once lost his patience or made me feel foolish. Mark has a wealth of knowledge, from the mechanics of how wheels respond to steering to reference points and tips for maneuvers. As I became more experienced and comfortable behind the wheel, he encouraged independent driving; trusting me to follow maps or road signs to reach our destination, greatly increasing my confidence in the process. Mark prepared me fully for my driving test, and I’m pleased to report that I passed on my first attempt. I highly recommend Mark Napier. Monica Hocking. Bexhill on sea.

I was nervous on the test day, I told to Jim. He told me Pank you can do. His words used to motivate me lot and here is the result today I have passed the test with two minors. Thanks Jim and L Plates. Pink Chopra. Burgess Hill.

I had the privilege of having Giles Blanch from L Plates to teach me to drive. Giles had already taught my brother Alec to drive 4 years ago and who himself passed his test first time. Giles is extremely patient a first class instructor. When I first started to learn with Giles I was very nervous. I have Aspergers Syndrome which impacts on this nervousness. He made me feel at ease right from the beginning. Extremely encouraging and positive. I would recommend Giles to any person wanting to learn to drive and any person(s) who may be on the Autistic Spectrum like me. Thank you Giles you have given me another step on the road to independence. Jamie Sorrell. Crawley.

Driving lessons Hailsham

November, 2014

I had a really positive experience learning to drive with L Plates. Frank, my instructor, had a really friendly and positive attitude throughout. Although he wasn't always right on time picking me up for lessons sometimes a few minutes late, it didn't matter because I‘m never on time getting ready to go anyway so it worked out just fine. Also sometimes in panic situations Frank got a bit shouty which panicked me more but it must have worked because no one crashed and everyone’s fine. I think the main reason I passed was because I was told enough times that I remembered to plan far ahead and try to correct my mistakes. All in all I feel I had an advantage having Frank as my instructor because I managed to be one of the not many people who passed first time. As a bonus I learned a lot of new routes to places which will come in handy :). Ella Orwell. Hailsham.

Driving schools Hastings

November, 2014

When I decided that I needed to learn to drive to improve my career options, I shopped around online and found L Plates the best value and within 24 hours of contacting them, Frank McLaren had called me and my first lesson was booked.
In the eight months since I started learning, Frank has been a brilliant tutor. His patience and calming nature has been very important because as a learner driver, you will make mistakes and become frustrated with yourself. In such instances, he will calmly and thoroughly explain what went wrong and how to avoid it happening again.
Frank was very flexible when it came to booking lessons and worked around my work schedule despite being very busy with other learners. When learning during the week became more difficult because of work commitments, Frank was very open to the idea of lessons on a Sunday which I was very grateful for.
Whether it was a one or two hour lesson, Frank supplied me with a variety of routes that allowed me to gain a greater experience of different scenarios drivers face every day. We regularly practiced each of the manoeuvres that you can be asked to demonstrate in your test to the point that I felt very confident with each of them on the day of my test.
All in all, learning to drive was a fantastic, enjoyable journey (pardon the pun) and I would certainly recommend L Plates and Frank McLaren to anyone looking to start driving. Jack Pierce. Hastings.

Having struggled in the past with my driving, Colin helped me get rid of my bad habits and gave me great tips and advice to making something hard a simple process.

I would like to say a big 'Thank You' to my instructor Colin Dawes for helping me pass driving test yesterday. Colin is a fantastic instructor who is very professional, patient and organized. Colin plans each lessons in a very methodical way, identifying and rectifying weak points of his students, providing support in making better decisions on the road, installing confidence in tackling difficult situations and helping you make a better and safe driver. His vast experience helps in early spotting of any issue you may encounter while driving and also prepares you the best way of getting through the driving tests.
Once again many thanks to Colin and L-Plates for helping me pass my test.

Colin from Sevenoaks, has been the best instructor I could have asked for. He is a very friendly hard working man who is takes his students driving tests very personally. When I had my first lesson with him I was quite nervous but Colin is very calming and keeps his cool in sticky situations. This means that you build up your confidence a lot quicker than any other Instructor. I have recommended lplates to all my friends to take driving lessons. Driving lessons Brighton

October, 2014

I discovered L Plates after hours of researching local driving schools online, as I had a negative experience with one of the large national driving schools a year ago.
Straight away it became very evident why they have so many glowing reviews. My instructor was Dave West, and from the moment I called to enquire about availability, the service has been consistently excellent.
After explaining the experience with my previous driving instructor, Dave put together a structured and comprehensive plan to ensure I felt absolutely confident in all aspects of driving.
For me, it wasn't just about 'passing my test', although that was obviously a major part of it. As an older driver (early 30's) with a young family, it was extremely important that I felt my driving was completely safe and that I had the knowledge needed to make the right decisions behind the wheel, as once I passed my test I would be driving a car full of passengers.
Well, Dave could not have done more to tailor my lessons to achieve this. I really felt that every aspect of my lesson was mapped out, so no time in the car was wasted. I especially liked that fact that Dave (and L Plates) provided supporting materials to complement what you're learning during the lessons. Dave provided foolproof methods for all the manoeuvres, which immediately gives you the confidence to carry them out successfully. Before you know it, you're not just completely confident in your techniques, you're actually looking forward to doing them as you know you have the ability to execute them perfectly - I now have a bit of a thing for reversing round a corner!
What I found really good was that Dave always went beyond just 'telling you' what to do, but explained the reason behind it and lets you do everything in your own time, never rushing you and never making you feel that you 'should have learnt it by now'. For me, this patience helped me learn properly and the reasoning behind it all makes it 'stick' as you truly understand what you're doing and why you're doing it.
The results of the lessons was that I went in for my test feeling CONFIDENT and thanks to Dave and L Plates, I passed - I only wish I found L Plates first time around.
If like me, you've spent hours trying to find a driving school that really cares about your driving and does everything to support you, then look no further. Give them a call and look forward to becoming the best driver you can be. Howard Doney. Brighton.

I passed my test! I passed my test! I passed with the help of Mr. Dave West: A Driving Instructor with L Plates School and a classic example of effortless cool! Nothing will phase him… so you can relax… if you put a foot wrong or miss your turn, he'll simply remind you that you're here to learn. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you can be sure that he's driving with you. He'll watch your speed and observe your manoeuvres, you'll be taught the right way and in your own time… ( learning slowly isn't a crime. ) So if you feel anxious or prone to worry, just remember: there is no hurry! Driving down a residential road always remember the Dave West code: "Twenty's plenty!", "No need to speed", "it's a recommendation, not a target!" (driving with Dave is always a 'rave'!) If you like a laugh and a chuckle or two, learning with Dave will benefit you!! You can also be sure, if you're foot hits 'the floor' at the worst time, he'll be sharp on the brake…make no mistake! Whatever your weakness, whatever your strength, Dave will guide you right…or will that be left? Only you can decide the set of your sails but Dave will get you through all the rough gales! Stormy seas-the roads today, so you need an instructor who's more than "okay". You need to be certain you're getting the right stuff, poodling along just won't be enough. It's a tough 'ol' test so you'll need the best…. Need I say more about Mr. Dave West? Shelley Robert Ginger. Brighton.

Automatic driving instructors Hastings

October, 2014

When I began looking for driving lessons in February 2014, L Plates was the best value for money. I actually saved money by buying my lessons in blocks of 10. I started my lessons in early March with my instructor, Mark Napier. Since the first phone call, I felt very relaxed and at ease with him. As a college student, Mark was able to fit my lessons around my college commitments, which I was very grateful for.
In each lesson, with the new things I had to learn, Mark explained everything thoroughly and it made it easier to understand. Most of my lessons were 2 hours long, so I had the time to really understand and practice the new skills I was learning. If there was anything I was struggling with, Mark picked up on it straight away and helped me through it. Mark was always so patient and understanding, which is something that's really needed in a driving instructor. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher.
After 7 months of learning with Mark, I passed my driving test, first time, with only 2 faults! I have no hesitation in recommending this driving school to anyone. Thank you so much, L Plates and of course, my fantastic teacher, Mark! Maybe I'll see you on the roads sometime soon. :)

Not learning to drive from the age of 17 was one of my biggest regrets and now at the age of 34, the more the years rolled on, the more daunting the task seemed. Learning to drive became a necessity for my working career and so it was now or never. I was recommend L Plates Driving School and in particular, Frank Judah, by a colleague of mine who had also passed at a later age. I have found Frank friendly and patient and also pragmatic in resolving issues. He is well balanced in his teaching technique to help work on these issues and also his praise for my achievements. Frank is punctual, reliable and made the whole process more enjoyable than daunting. For an area of the country that boasts numerous independent and national driving schools which would spin the head of any new learner when it comes to choosing a suitable and reliable name, I would highly recommend L Plates Driving School and Frank and his colleagues, especially if they are as personable and thorough in their teachings as Frank, for pupils of all ages. Its never too late to learn and learn well. Shannon Parker. Lancing.

I really enjoyed and gained good driving experience with my instructor Ray Brewster, I was in safe and experienced hands and really learned a lot in my driving lessons, I learned to control the vehicle, be safe, efficient and a competent driver. I passed my driving test first time so this and all of the above is why I have given the service and quality 5 out of 5. Chloe Hausdoerfer. Hove.

October, 2014

I couldn't recommend Jim Eckford enough. I had heard about him from a friend of mine, and knew of his reputation because I knew a lot of people who had learned to drive with him; a reputation I hasten to add that is thoroughly and wholly deserved.
To split it into the two most important aspects. Firstly, Jim creates the perfect atmosphere for learning to drive. If you thought being the passenger in a car driven by a potentially dangerous Learner was a scary prospect, you wouldn't have known it from him. He is dead calm in the car, which gives you the confidence in your own ability to drive and make decisions on the road that you need to make the most of your time behind the wheel. He also has the judgement and wisdom to know every rut or barrier you may encounter and help you overcome them.
Secondly, he is a master of getting people through the driving test. I learnt to drive from scratch in only 3 months, with only 2 minors. A major miracle for someone who could never be described as a 'natural driver'. If you feel unsure about driving, need to learn quickly for any reason or fancy passing the test first time then look no further than Jim; it is full value for money learning with him. Alex Trafford, 18, Hove.

As a lapsed learner my instructor, John Mell was able to get me into a position so that I was test ready in just over 2 months. He taught in a calm, safe demeanour which enabled me to relax and drive to a high standard. He was also able to plan the lessons in a way that they were always challenging and engaging without to much repetition. This service was also extremely good value for money as he also planned the lessons so that I always got the best deal. James Gordon. Horley.

October, 2014

I came to driving very late. At 17, I had showed no interest in driving and instead spent my money elsewhere. It was only at the age of 22 that I thought I should get on and do it. This meant that when I finally sat in front of the wheel for the first time, I hadn't a clue what I was doing but felt that it was far overdue. My instructor, Frank McLaren, was incredible. He stated in our first lesson that his only rule was not to apologise. We are there to learn. If we knew it all to begin with, then there would be no reason for us to be there. Although I broke this rule about twenty times a lesson, as I was continually making mistakes, Frank never complained, never got angry, just advised on the best way to avoid these next time around. Frank is patient, kind and an excellent teacher. And when I passed, it was such a relief for both of us because we had both worked so hard to achieve it. I would happily recommend Frank as a driving instructor as I genuinely don't have anything bad to say about him. Listen to what he says, and if only half of it sinks in, you'll still end up a great driver. Becky Stovold. Bexhill.

I tried to learn to drive 3 different times with 3 different driving schools but always ended up quitting as there was always something missing and I didn't enjoy it.i left it 9 years but decided that I now needed to be able to drive now that I'm a mother. Terry Bardsley at L Plates was amazing. He gave me confidence when I had none and made me smile through every lesson. I don't think he realises how good he is with dealing with any situation thrown at him. I passed my test first time with no faults and I owe it all to him, I've come away with not only my licence but a true friend for life! Thank you Terry xx Clare. Peacehaven.

Driving instructors Brighton

October, 2014

I’m sat on the couch watching the clock. My palms are all clammy. Beep beep, Damn! He’s on time (again). Why am I so anxious? I’m learning to drive a Suzuki Swift not a Jumbo Jet!
I’m not sure what it was, but as soon as I sat behind the wheel, all of those nerves seemed to disappear. Was it the feeling of power? Being within touching distance of true freedom? Or the air-con? I guess maybe it was just the calming influence of my bald, 6’3” driving instructor sat in the passenger seat? Dave always made me feel relaxed. He had my weak points and anxieties down within a couple of hours so knew exactly what might be on my mind.
Any worries were laid to rest after a few lessons. I found that the lesson plan of learning something new, practicing it and then starting the next lesson with a recap meant soon, we were just meeting up for a nice little drive from Brighton to Burgess Hill and back each week. Sometimes we stopped for Ice-cream which sounds more romantic than it actually was.
Driving was going well, I had control of the car. I had found my biting point and kept it at the tip of my toes, ready and waiting for when it was time to learn the manoeuvres.
The first was the emergency stop. Tyre screeches and a puff of smoke, I had this one in the bag. I graduated and progressed onto the turn-in-the-road. This one used to spring up a few surprises (narrow roads, oncoming traffic, uneven road surfaces) But I paid attention to Dave’s instructions and it quickly became second nature. Parallel parking was the only one I HAD to get right! Not for me but for my wife (who’s been doing it wrong for years – she learnt with another school!) And when it came to reversing around corners and into car parking bays, Dave made me a master of these after the 2nd attempt (no one is perfect)
It’s fair to say that by the time my practical came around I wasn’t so much nervous but sad that my lessons may be over as they ended up being very enjoyable.
If you learn with L-Plates and are lucky enough to get Dave, look after him, he’s getting old!
Matt - 34, Brighton. Passed with 2 minors (which I contest but I wasn’t going to argue).

Automatic driving instructors Worthing

September, 2014

At a little shy of 42 years old I decided that I should give learning to drive one more shot, having tried, failed and been mortified by the process, at age 17.
My instructor, Terry Bardsley, was fantastic, for a number of reasons. Not only did he achieve what I believed to be the unachievable (getting me to pass a test), he also gave me the confidence to think that it may actually just be possible.
As well as supporting me to beat my nerves, Terry also assisted me with my severe lack of co-ordination, which I would put down to his brilliant teaching skills and a calm, humorous personality. A lesser man would have refused the challenge!
Whilst I am extremely grateful to Terry for the hours of patient instruction he gave me, I must also apologise to him for the amount of times things went over my head, the times I lost the ability to use words from the question booklet, and instead went flouncing off on an absolute tangent, and for the first test, when I managed to make a three point turn look like a routine from Strictly Come Dancing.
In closing, I have had the best experience learning to drive this time round, and will genuinely miss my weekly lessons with Terry. I cannot recommend him highly enough as an instructor. Jerry Kirbell-Garlick. Worthing.

September, 2014

I just recently passed with Terry Bardsley. He really boosted my confidence in the car and never gave up on me. It took me a while due to my nerves. However he was always really enthusiastic with the teaching and made it a lot easier to learn. Terry was never hesitant to any questions that I had to ask and was always positive with me. If Terry ever felt I was unsure he always made me reassure him and myself that I knew what to do. Terry was always on time for my lessons and was open to take me home to where ever I needed to go. I had an amazing experience learning with Terry and it didn't feel like a chore. I always looked forward to my lessons and that was because of Terry. So I would like to say a big thank you to the company and to Terry for giving me the help and support I needed. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone and if I can pass anyone can too! Grace M. Driving lessons Seaford

September, 2014

I learnt to drive with Dave West, and I've been recommending him until blue in the face since starting with him. I'm not your average nervous person - I have a wonderful cocktail of generalised anxiety disorder including strong social ("performance") anxiety and have panic attacks. I believed for years that driving would be impossible for me. It me took until age 25 to even try booking driving lessons! Even picking up the phone when Dave first called terrified me but, as I remember saying to my partner after we finalised details, "he sounds lovely actually, maybe it'll be okay!" And it really, really was. More than just "okay", even. Dave was immediately friendly and chatty to put me at ease. From the start his teaching was tailored to suit my rather extreme needs. Dave was completely accepting of my anxiety and together we decided how best to modify learning strategies and exposure to new material (like roundabouts, manoeuvres and meeting oncoming traffic) to reduce the risk of a panic attack until my confidence improved. He never once became frustrated or disappointed when my confidence took a knock or if I was close to a panic attack from a minor set-back, which makes him a very rare gem in this world! He was only ever supportive and encouraging - helping me quash the anxiety spirals before they'd start - which I am eternally grateful for. We got on great; we spent a good portion of lessons laughing and chatting, yet we were always on task. Dave could immediately spot and help correct errors and would encourage good, safe driving skills. He thinks of his students as future drivers, not just people wanting to pass exams. He also knew his theory and practical driving exams inside out and could answer any questions about them to help calm nerves, so there wouldn't be any surprises on the day and his students can demonstrate their driving to the best of their ability. He genuinely believed I'd be able to drive if I stuck with it and eventually I believed him too, enough to pass the test first time which I'm still over-the-moon about. I had absolutely no confidence when I started, but the confidence I've gained through learning to drive has seeped into other areas of my life, too. So cheers Dave! Come visit the uni with your family for an astronomy evening sometime for some space fun and a catch-up! :) " --Thanks for reading, Charlotte Clarke. Seaford.

Frank became my driving instructor in early February 2014, he was recommended to me via a friend I went to University with.
I passed my driving test on My Mum's Birthday, which was the 2nd of September 2014.
Frank has a zero tolerance for the word "Sorry" and that suited me great. Throughout our lessons we shared the same frustrations of other drivers on the road. We had a laugh.
My lessons were scheduled around my busy full-time work/Mummy duties. Frank chose routes that simulated the directions in which you may drive during your test. I felt at ease during my test as I was following familiar routes.
Frank seems genuine, down to earth, teaches to your ability and has "100%" confidence in you when he knows you're ready for testing day.
Wonderful Scottish accent. Many Thanks, Frank! Hannah Wood. Eastbourne.

From the first time I sat in the car, having no previous driving experience, to passing my test within 3 months(!) my instructor, Jim, was very friendly, patient & professional as I developed my driving skills. One of the main aspects of the driving lessons I really found useful, was the numerous mock tests conducted in preparation for the test, as a result I passed first time with only 2 minor faults! :)

John Leeming has been teaching me on and off to drive over the last year. I went from a nervous hot mess to passing my test first time. John helped me get past all my fears resulting in me gaining confidence when driving. I felt he pushed me to all the right limits making me realise I can do things I was afraid of. If I ever had financial difficulties John would always understand and would allow me to contact him when I could afford to continue. John is not only a fantastic instructor he also is a wonderful person. There was never awkward silences and he is so polite and friendly. Also he has such patience, I suppose he has to when dealing with learners like myself! I am so happy that I passed first time and I have john to thank. I would highly recommend him to anyone and I shall to all those I speak to who are interested in learning. Natalie Carroll. Eastbourne.

Driving lessons Crawley

August, 2014

Raj Purba was a brilliant instructor he made me feel really conformable and at ease with the car, i will like to thank him firstly for building up my confidence on the road and for him sticking with me from start to finish as i was not the easiest person to teach and thing took a little longer to get the hang off but without this hard work and confidences in me i would not have been able to do it. Learning how to drive with Raj Purba is a confidence boost, he doesn't make you feel bad if you do something wrong, just tells you how to improve it next time. Raj is always on time and he makes you feel comfortable as he is very friendly and has funny banter which makes the driving lessons fun! With raj you're able to choose what you want to do in each lesson this makes you feel involved with your own learning and thats what everyone looks for! Would highly recommend as hes highly efficient. Hayley Smith. Crawley.

Driving lessons Bexhill

August, 2014

I would like to say that my driving instructor, Mark Napier was very patient and explained things very clearly. He also offers lots of different methods for retaining and explaining information so he really can accommodate any learning style! I couldn't recommend him enough! Thank you! Alexis Cooper-Dervan. Driving lessons Brighton

August, 2014

An enormous thank you to Dave West who helped me to pass my driving test this morning!
When I first started with Dave at L Plates, I had just completed a block of lessons with my first instructor. Unstructured lesson plans and no proper explanation of how to use the clutch had left me frustrated, confused and low in confidence. Passing my test seemed like an unattainable dream.
This all changed after getting behind the wheel with Dave. Within our first hour lesson, he had explained exactly how the clutch worked and I watched in amazement as I controlled the car on a hill with ease and skill! I was surprised at how quickly I gained confidence on the road. We always recapped what I had learnt the previous lesson, which meant that I was always progressing & building on prior knowledge and skill.

Dave is a calm, encouraging & reassuring presence in the passenger seat. He put across concepts with an effective mix of visual aids, verbal explanations and good old humour! What really impressed me in his teaching was how he always knew exactly how and why something didn't go quite right, and in my case it was usually because I was worrying about a mistake I had made earlier! He was always positive, often displaying more confidence in my ability to pass than I did. This was invaluable as it spurred me on whenever I showed signs of doubting myself.
On the day of my test I was a bag of nerves, but Dave miraculously managed to put me at ease and help me focus. I have not only walked away with a pass, but a genuine friend. Rest assured that Dave at L Plates will get you through! He has transformed me from an anxious stalling caterpillar into a soaring butterfly on the road.
