I’m pleased to say that at the grand old age of 38 I have finally passed my driving test! 

After years of stop-starts and not making any progress, I decided to take up lessons again, as I’m sure many people do, as a New Years resolution. 

I have to admit that I had done this a few times before, again as I’m sure many others have done in the past. 

And so, it was with fragile confidence and an uncertain sense of “here we go again”, I decided to take the plunge last January and book in some lessons. 

And so after contacting L Plates Driving School, I found myself getting a call back from Ray Brewster, my local instructor. And that was it. We were ready to book in some lessons and get out on the road together. 

Over the course of several, I am surprised to admit, enjoyable months out in the car together, I found myself driving the routes of Burgess Hill, thinking, “I could actually do this”. 

Somewhere out on those country roads, circling those roundabouts, reversing around those corners, parking in those bays, navigating those one way streets and occasionally stalling at those traffic lights; with his patient coaching ability and friendly, supportive manner, Ray had installed the confidence and belief in me that I was actually ready to take, and pass, my test. 

And pass I did. First time! And with confidence! Thank you so much Ray for the belief that you have shown in me, that I admittedly did not always see in myself. Thank you for the hard work you have put in over that time, instinctively knowing how to coax the best out of me. Throughout those months, Ray combined true patience, a steely nerve and a great sense of humour to keep me heading in the right direction.

I contacted L Plates to do my driving lessons as I had just had my son and knew I would finally have some time to do it, as well as it would make it easier for me getting to work and taking him to nursery when my maternity leave ended. I was dreading it though, I hated parallel and bay parking. I had done a few lessons 5 years ago and could not get it right, I felt that I was never going to get my drivers licence. But I had a great instructor from L Plates, Giles Blanche, he was very patient and calm and showed me really easy ways to overcome the dreaded parking. My name is Tomasz Rak. I've had only 22 lessons with Frank McLaren, starting as an absolute beginner, Frank taught me everything and more than I needed to pass my test first time with only 3 minor faults. Frank is a great teacher, every lesson is fun and relaxed but still get the work done. At some point I was scared of driving but Frank helped me to relax and sit behind the wheel again. He goes though every aspect and possible situation on the road in detail but doesnt waste time. Learning with him is very fun, fast and an absolute pleasure. I cant think him enough. I started learning with L plates two years ago and can simply say it has been such a brilliant experience! My instructor Ray Brewster was always positive, encouraging, and a joy to learn with. He took me through all the elements I didn't understand and was never patronizing, and never pushing me to move quicker than I felt at the time. From teaching me the fundamentals of how the car works to the theory elements- with his trusty ipad at the ready, he would show me video clips, interactive demonstrations, maps of the areas and photos of the car, even getting me to demonstrate myself what manoeuvres I was trying to do for instance. If I struggled to figure out what angle the car needed to be he would show me with a toy car so that I was fully aware of my actions and reference points to follow - truly catering for unique learning styles! I was clearly aware of how I needed improve in each lesson, we'd set targets prior to driving with a full review of the lesson at the end of the session. To conclude I cannot stipulate enough how much I would recommend L Plates, they are great value for money and actually care for their students learning and progress ! I past first time with 4 minors with L Plates despite I had taken a test 4 years before with a different driving school which I regret as I wasn't ready ! Which I soon found out. My instructor Ray Brewster Was truly an efficient teacher. He taught me everything I needed to know and gave me extra information to learn at home In order for me to become a confident driver. My confidence was an issue with me, but with Ray's patience and encouragement I overcame that to get the end result that I desired. He makes sure you are ready for your test before you go for it and that was proven by me passing my test. He always has time for his pupils even after driving hours so any questions you may have are answered. Even if I had failed my test I know Ray and the help of L plates would give me the help I needed to take the test again. Most importantly I always found if you are comfortable with your instructor driving lessons should feel relaxed, and driving with Ray I found that he was an easy person to address. L Plates Driving School, was fantastic. It is a mid-sized company, that I believe to be perfectly optimal -because it is much more personal than a national company, yet has sufficient instructor availability. It's size means that the company and the intructor seem to be able to support each other effectively too. The office is great (especially Jo) they not only listened to me to match the correct instructor (letting me speak to 2), they also efficiently took card payments without a card surcharge! Both instructors I spoke to were extremely comptent and experienced. My instructor -Sue was outstanding. I was an older, nervous driver, having had bad experiences in the preceeding 7 months with 3 different driving schools (including well known ones!) and I was beginning to believe I perhaps wasn't suitable for driving at all ! Sue's approach mixes comprehensive constructive feedback with postive encourgement, she also managesd to excellently balance her professional comptence with a warm and approachable personality. Hi my name is Erhan Coskun. I am very happy that I had taken lesson from Mr Giles Blanch who teach me, how I need kill my nerves. He told me, when I have to sit to practical test, I shouldn't think about the person who going to lead me to pass or fail. Which gave me feeling that they hate! me and I'm going to fail again. I never give up on trying. I have changed 2 instructors, they were giving me more pressure, it wasn't there fault! It was me with my nerves problem. My brother find Mr Giles Blanch. Learning to drive is an exciting but really daunting part of your life but this was eased due to John Mell's calm, kind and funny, but professional nature. It's always a nerve racking time, but he was always fully supportive and extremely patient! I would highly recommend John as he was always considerate of when I was busy, so would arrange a lesson that was best for me, so I never once had to worry about missing lessons or taking longer to learn. Having Terry as a driving instructor was absolutely amazing! If there is a person out there who doesn't know you but has complete confidence in you its Terry. The thought of driving absolutely terrified me, but Frank is brilliant, especially if you're a little nervous at first! Today I passed my Practical Driving test first time! 

My experience with my driving instructor Frank Mclaren has been amazing. In my opinion he is a great instructor just because the way he taught me made me feel relaxed whilst driving, as well as teaching me to pass my test first time. 

He worked around my college day with lessons and if I ever needed any help he was always there to help me out. He is a great instructor and I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to drive.

My experience with L Plates has been really swift and after only having around 30 hours of driving with Frank since I stared in February and since I have started I have really quickly managed to pick up how to drive and Franks tips were also really useful to.

I was very nervous and didn't want to learn to drive and my mum booked my lessons without me knowing and I'm so glad she did with L plates because my instructor Frank McLaren was brilliant he was very patient with me and got me up to test standard very quickly and even offered to help me with my theory test which was very nervous about. I would highly recommend Frank as he was highly flexible with times and where he picked me up whether it was from college or from home. I could not have asked for a better instructor! Every time I did something wrong, he would not only tell me, but tell me how to correct it. This really helped me to understand what I was doing and how I should be doing it. Ray Brewster was my instructor. I 100%, 10/10, would recommend him. He is an all round nice, friendly, funny guy. He will work silly hours all day, pick you up and drop you off at your destination. The first thing that drew me to L Plates was the offer for 2 hours for the price of 1 for your first lesson. Which is great as it gives you an opportunity to meet the instructor to make sure you get along. Colin was very good, he explained everything fully, with the use of diagrams so you understood what you would do before doing it. He helped me to learn alot by when I made mistakes heexplained to me what I had done wrong and how to avoid doing it again, also has loads of little hints and tips. Overall I was very happy and passed first time. I would defiantly recommend L Plates and Colin. Adam Percy. Tonbridge.
