I had a great experience with L Plates Driving School, I found their website easy to use in terms of finding prices and instructors in my area. My instructor Sue got in touch with me quickly, and immediately put me at ease over the phone and I knew instantly that I would do well with her. She is friendly and extremely calming and patient and great at explaining things in a way that is easy to absorb. She is great at reading you and your ability, knowing when to support and encourage and when to push you harder. She had every confidence in me which helped me to be confident in myself. She knew when I was ready to pass my test (I wasn't quite so sure), but then I passed first time with one minor, so she was right! I loved every minute of learning to drive with my instructor Frank. He taught me everything I needed to know for my test and more and he had an extremely calm and considerate approach to everything.
His car was always immaculate and well maintained and he always helped me with any problems I had.
Frank always managed to get me a lesson when I wanted one and gave me priority over others when it came to around my test date that defiantly helped me out.
Frank and I were always on the same page and he never rushed me or made me not progress enough. He was also firm but fair when he came to his marking on the mock tests - something that I am extremely grateful for!
I was recommended to use Frank and L Plates via my sister and I am so glad that I did. After only 20 minutes from contacting the school, I already had my first lesson booked!
Overall it was an absolute pleasure having Frank teach me and I have and still will recommend Frank and L Plates to anyone mentioning that they are looking for a driving instructor and I am looking forward to completing my Pass Plus with him! Harvey Cranford. Worthing.

Passing my driving test has been a long and trying affair. I started having lessons at 22 however put them on hold to go to medical school. Following graduation I had a series of lessons in London before moving to Brighton, at which time I started getting lessons with Ray Brewster of L plates driving school. I found Ray to be a patient, thorough, and easy going instructor who was a pleasure to work with. He gave me plenty of confidence and ensured that I was not only ready for my test, but capable of driving confidently on my own after passing. I couldn't recommend him highly enough. I was taught by Colin and took my test in Tunbridge Wells. He was the best instructor I could have asked for. I was terrified at first, but he quickly helped me gain confidence and was a very calming influence. He never raised his voice when I did something wrong which is exactly what you need, and always reinforced the fact that mistakes were normal in order to learn and progress. Collin was always willing to answer any questions I had about driving, the test procedures, insurance or potential first cars too. As as naturally nervous person, I never thought I could be taught to be a confident driver, but that's exactly what Colin has helped me be! I would recommend him, and L Plates, to any learner. A big thanks to Giles Blanch of L Plates Driving School under whose tutelage I recently passed my practical driving test. Giles is very knowledgeable, friendly and professional and his instructions and driving tips are excellent, easy to understand and implement. Although I have a driving license from India, I was in no way ready to clear the exam when I started lessons. Giles helped me overcome bad driving habits and I am now a much safer and better driver. I cannot rate my experience with L Plates Driving School highly enough, this is all down to the fantastic tutelage of Colin Dawes. I have just passed my test on the first attempt due to his calm and structured teaching methods.
As well as helping me to pass the test, he has also ensured that I am ready to go out on the roads as a responsible driver and has passed on his wisdom and tips to help me through the many years of driving I have ahead. I used to learn to drive years ago, in a different country, on the right side of the road, but never followed through. I chose L Plates as they have very good prices. I didn't know what to expect, but it turned out I had to start from basics. I was very lucky to be taught by John Mell. He explains everything in a calm and reassuring manner, never rushing things or expecting too much (or too little!). It was always clear to me what we were going to do and he always took my comments and doubts into account. I passed first time and, although I am very strict with myself and I did think of every way it could go wrong, with John's constant encouragement I knew I was able to do it. Learning to drive with L plates was the best decision I made. Colin is extremely hardworking and patient. He praises you when things go well and will never make you feel bad if you don't get something straight away. When I first began learning I was very nervous due to a previous experience. I moved down from London and I had been doing lessons in London for over 6/7 months. Considering I had been doing lessons for that long I should of been confident and coming near to booking a test but I wasn't. When I started with L-Plated and my instructor Jon Mckie, I was very nervous but Jon was quick to calm my nervous! Jon made me tackle my fears such as big roundabouts, hill starts, driving at night and driving in the rain. He made me feel confident and made me believe that I was a good driver. When it came to doing my practical tests I would panic and after a few attempts and failing I was ready to give up and call it quits. Although Jon didn't give up on me and didn't let me quit! I have now finally passed and I genuinely could not have done it without Jon and all his time and effort he had put in. I am truly a great driver and I owe it all to Jon! I'm very thankful that he didn't let me quit and let me face my fears. One being a hill start on a big roundabout. Jon is an amazing instructor, he takes the lessons in your pace but also pushes you to what he knows you're capable of. I was recommended to John Mell by my dad who knew John previously and who had taught my sister to drive as well. On my first introductory lesson I immediately felt at ease with John’s teaching style and knew immediately I would be comfortable with him as my driving instructor. I’m pleased to say that at the grand old age of 38 I have finally passed my driving test!
After years of stop-starts and not making any progress, I decided to take up lessons again, as I’m sure many people do, as a New Years resolution.
I have to admit that I had done this a few times before, again as I’m sure many others have done in the past.
And so, it was with fragile confidence and an uncertain sense of “here we go again”, I decided to take the plunge last January and book in some lessons.
And so after contacting L Plates Driving School, I found myself getting a call back from Ray Brewster, my local instructor. And that was it. We were ready to book in some lessons and get out on the road together.
Over the course of several, I am surprised to admit, enjoyable months out in the car together, I found myself driving the routes of Burgess Hill, thinking, “I could actually do this”.
Somewhere out on those country roads, circling those roundabouts, reversing around those corners, parking in those bays, navigating those one way streets and occasionally stalling at those traffic lights; with his patient coaching ability and friendly, supportive manner, Ray had installed the confidence and belief in me that I was actually ready to take, and pass, my test.
And pass I did. First time! And with confidence! Thank you so much Ray for the belief that you have shown in me, that I admittedly did not always see in myself. Thank you for the hard work you have put in over that time, instinctively knowing how to coax the best out of me. Throughout those months, Ray combined true patience, a steely nerve and a great sense of humour to keep me heading in the right direction.
It has been a real pleasure to be taught by you Ray, thank you, and I wish you all the best for the future. Matt Norman. Brighton.

I contacted L Plates to do my driving lessons as I had just had my son and knew I would finally have some time to do it, as well as it would make it easier for me getting to work and taking him to nursery when my maternity leave ended. I was dreading it though, I hated parallel and bay parking. I had done a few lessons 5 years ago and could not get it right, I felt that I was never going to get my drivers licence. But I had a great instructor from L Plates, Giles Blanche, he was very patient and calm and showed me really easy ways to overcome the dreaded parking. I had no previous experience of driving. Sue built up my confidence and skills and ensured lessons focused on key areas. I am soooo happy for my driving licence. Luckily, After two instructors, I found my favourite instructor Mark. He was very friendly and flexible in so many ways. He has always understood my situation and kept inspiring me always and not to give up. He used to be very calm even when I made mistakes(what I needed so much). Ray was very patient and always helped me relax so I could drive better and make the most of the two hour lessons. It was a pleasure to learn with him. I learned in about 6 months and it did not cost me too much compared to other driving schools in the area. The car is brand new and nice to drive and arranging the lessons was always easy.
